Singing and Dancing in the Rain

Someone once said, It’s not about waiting for the storm to pass, it’s about learning to dance in the rain. Do you just try to survive storms or wait for them to pass each winter in Modesto? Have you learned to dance in the rain? Is there any value in rain? What keeps us from dancing in the rain of our lives? What helps us to dance? Our Lenten theme this year is “Coming Clean” and this is an opportunity as lent begins to “come clean” as we explore this theme and the questions and challenges surrounding it. You are invited to The Quiet Place (Rm 5 at church) Monday evening, February 27^th from 6:30 p.m. – 7:30 p.m. for a time of reflection, sharing and prayer. Childcare will be provided. Stay after and enjoy refreshments immediately following. There will also be a Free Will offering for Inter-Faith Ministries for those wishing to bring canned goods or nonperishables AND/OR cash/checks that can be made to IFM.

Good Friday Worship

You are invited to ecumenical Good Friday worships planned by a variety of pastors and offered at First United Methodist Churcheach half hour in the afternoon. Each service will be unique and led by a different pastor. There will also be an evening Tenebrae service at College Avenue Congregational United Church of Christ. Several churches, including the Modesto Church of the Brethren, come together to provide leadership and share worship together on this special holy day.

Maundy Thursday Love Feast

This is a special practice in The Church of the Brethren of sharing together in a re-enactment of Jesus’ time with the disciples in The Upper Room. We come together to share in a time of confession, feetwashing, a fellowship meal, and holy communion. All are welcome to participate in the full experience or to observe any part as well.

Maundy Thursday – Love Feast

Enjoy a service, feet washing and a simple meal to symbolically the Last Supper. April 1 at 6:30pm at the Modesto Church of the Brethren.

Good Friday Ecumenical Service

April 2 and 12:15pm, a service at St. Paul Episcopal Church.

Journey To The Cross; A Lenten Concert

Come enjoy a journey into and through Holy Week with a Lenten Concert featuring the Adult Choir and Handbell Ensemble, hymns and scripture.

Join us at the Modesto Church of the Brethren starting at 7:00pm on April 2.

Congregational Retreat (May 4th-6th)

May 4-6, 2012 join with others from the congregation at Whispering Pines for the weekend under the theme, “United!we stand–or together we fall“. David Radcliff of the New Community Project will engage us with photos, stories and statistics from our global neighborhood, while inviting us toward discussion of the challenges we face and the power we have for change. Our interconnected world offers opportunities for trade, travel, truffles and many other positive factors; it also confronts us with an assortment of not-so-positive dimensions: sweatshops, resource wars!and global climate change, to name a few. How do we live responsibly as people of faith in a world like this? How can we show our solidarity with those on the receiving end of the down-side of globalization? How can we move our communities and nation toward liberty and justice for all–and not just for some? This retreat is open to high school ages on up. Save the date now!

Ash Wednesday Service

Join us in the sanctuary for a brief time of intentionally walking into the Lenten season together. Our theme this year isRoadblocks. All season we will be exploring a variety of “roadblocks” to our faith, things that can keep us from being as close to God as we might. This evening will be a time of beginning to focus on the season as we enter it. We will offer ashes on the forehead as a marker of the beginning of Lent for those who would like.
